Sports Movies

Remember the Titans, Shaoulin Soccer, Bend it like Beckham, and Field of Dreams all have something in common –they are all sports movies that I love! Movies about sports are very important because they help shape the way we perceive sports and they are part of the culture that has sprung up around sports. They are also very entertaining and fun to watch!

In a lot of sports movies there is a workout scene where there is a montage of clips showing a team or person working out to intense or inspirational music. I absolutely love those workout scenes because often times they are when the transformation takes place with the main team or person in the movie. Sometimes those scenes are corny and unrealistic, but they always get me excited and give me the feeling that anything is possible if you work for it.

I have noticed that in many sports movies, the underdog team or player succeeds in the end. Even though this may not happen very often in real life, it is exciting to watch it happen in the movies because it reminds us that it is possible. Many movies also show sports as a way to bond with other people and overcome differences in order to succeed with the sport.

I think sports movies are a great way to pass the time and enjoy sports. Comment below and tell me about your favorite sports movies and the best parts about them.

So without further adieu here are the top 5 worst uniforms:

Which do you think is the worst? Which is the best?

Don’t try this at home unless your name is Travis Pastrana

How awesome would it be to fly through the air on a motorcycle…upside-down!!?? I wish I could do that, but when I think of the pain I’d be in if I fell I am thankful I have both my feet on the ground.

Have you ever watched the X Games and seen Travis Pastrana do tricks? It is simply amazing and I recommend you watch him next time the X Games are on. You won’t believe your eyes.

So since we can’t be Travis Pastrana we can try playing as him in video games. What do you think about playing sports video games? Is it close to the real thing? Would you rather actually be playing the sport or is it fun to pretend?

What's your favorite sports videogame? Do you think you could beat me???

David Beckham plays football or soccer?

A couple weeks ago David Beckham tied Bobby Moore’s England record of 108 caps for a field player when he came on as a substitute at the start of the second half of the friendly game against Spain. This remarkable feat was achieved by Beckham, who is signed to the Los Angeles Galaxy, but is on loan to a European team called AC Milan. Now that Beckham is having such a great time playing for Milan he wants to stay there! When questioned about his desires Beckham said, "I want to remain with Milan, I've heard nothing from Galaxy, but when it's like this you say it could be good news." So Beckham obviously wants to stay in Europe and play football, but will the Galaxy let him go? I hope he stays so soccer can become more popular in the US.

Why do people in the United States say Beckham plays soccer when people in other countries say he plays football?

The World Cup will be held in South Africa in 2010. Which country do you think will win?

Kryptonite or Krypto-Nate

The 5-foot-9 Nate "Lex Luthor" Robinson wore an all-green Knicks uniform with bright green shoes and spring-boarded over the 6-foot-11 Dwight "Superman" Howard in the NBA dunk contest over the weekend. Isn't that incredible?!!

What was your favorite dunk from the contest? Sometimes I like to lower the basketball rim down so I can dunk on it. I love doing 360 dunks! Can you dunk a basketball?

Cheater

Alex Rodriguez is considered one of the greatest hitters in the history of Major League Baseball. Now he is considered one of the greatest hitters to cheat. In case your parents forgot to pay the cable bill or your computer stopped functioning the last couple of days then all you need to know is that Alex Rodriguez took drugs in attempt to increase his abilities on the baseball field.

It’s a sad day in the baseball world when you learn that one of the best players in the game is a cheater. Rodriguez risked his reputation and legacy when he decided to take drugs, but most importantly he risked his health and wellbeing. Let Rodriguez’s mistake be a lesson for us all.

What are your thoughts about Alex Rodriguez and cheating and sports in general?

Are you a fan of the Yankees after hearing this news? Who is your favorite baseball player?

Competitive Eating

Whoa look at them eat! Here is Joey "Jaws" Chestnut competing against Takeru Kobayashi in a hot dog eating contest. Who do you think won? Well, both ended up eating 59 hot dogs and buns in 12 minutes and Chestnut went on to win after beating Kobayshi in a 5 hot dog tie-breaker.
They look like they're suffering and working hard, but do you think this is a sport?
By the way you shouldn't try this at home because you're sure to get sick afterward and you might chock, but I think it's fun to watch the professionals eat as fast as they can. Just writing about food makes me hungry so I'm going to cook hot dogs and burgers for dinner. Mmmmm.....

Super Bowl

The Super Bowl is finally here and I’m so pumped!!! The Arizona Cardinals play against the Pittsburg Steelers and I can’t wait for the Cardinals to be VICTORIOUS!! My favorite player is Cardinals’ wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald. He has the best hands in the game and can catch any pass sent his way. If I were the Steelers I’d be scared right about now.

I’d have to say that besides the actual game, my favorite part about the Super Bowl is the commercials. Any other time I watch TV I just change the channel when the commercials start, but for the Super Bowl I just have to watch them because they are so funny. Did you know it costs 3 million dollars for advertisers to buy a 30 second time slot just to advertise one of their products? That’s 100 thousand dollars a second! How many weeks of allowance will you have to save in order to buy a Super Bowl commercial spot for just 100th of a second? Do the math. You might need a bigger allowance.

Here is my prediction for the game: Cardinals’ quarterback Kurt Warner will throw for 300 yards and three touchdowns as the Cardinals win 31-24 in an all out battle.

Is anybody having a Super Bowl party? What’s your favorite food to eat while watching the Super Bowl?

Mercy

Recently a high school girls’ basketball game in Dallas ended with a score of 100-0. With the score 80-0 in the fourth quarter the winning team was still shooting 3-pointers and piling it on. I’ve seen games where the final score is 15-8 so 100-0 seems a little ridiculous right? Do you think the coach of the winning team should be fired for pressing his players to keep scoring again and again?

I’ve been on the losing end of a blowout game a few times and it doesn’t feel good, but I also know what it’s like to win big. At what point in a game do you stop competing and show a little compassion? Tell me about a blowout game you participated in. I’d love to hear your story.

Dwight Howard is Superman

Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic is the most dominating center in the league today. He leads the NBA in blocked shots, rebounds, and double-doubles. Last year Dwight Howard wowed everyone with his spectacular dunking display during All-Star festivities. He came out to participate in the dunk contest wearing a Superman costume - cape and all! He'll try and defend that title at the Slam Dunk contest this year in Phoenix.

Yesterday he was awarded by the fans for all his hard work when they voted him starting center for the Eastern Conference All-Stars. He received a whopping 3,150,181 votes from fans to break the previous record of 2,558,278 votes received by Yao Ming four years ago.

Here is a list of the All-Star starters this year:

Eastern Conference
F- LeBron James, Cleveland
F- Kevin Garnett, Boston
C- Dwight Howard, Orlando
G- Allen Iverson, Detroit
G- Dwayne Wade, Miami

Western Conference
F- Amare Stoudemire, Phoenix
F- Tim Duncan, San Antonio
C- Yao Ming, Houston
G- Kobe Bryant, Los Angeles
G- Chris Paul, New Orleans

Do you think another player should be starting instead of one of these guys? Who else deserves to play in the All-Star game?

Candace Parker

Candace Parker is simply amazing! She is my favorite WNBA player and has compiled so many awards over the years that my brain hurts thinking about it. For starters she is known for being the first woman to dunk in an NCAA tournament game as well as the first woman to dunk twice in a college game.  She is 6 foot 4 inches so that probably helps. I only wish I could dunk. I'd be happy just touching the rim.

Parker attended Naperville Central High School and lead her team to state titles in 2003 and 2004 and in the process became the only two-time winner of the USA Today Player of the Year Award.  As a senior she competed in the Slam Dunk contest against future NBA Slam Dunk contestants JR Smith and Josh Smith and won! Isn't that awesome?

In college she lead the Tennesse Lady Vols to national championships in 2007 and 2008 before declaring for the WNBA draft where she was the #1 pick.

You won't believe who is in her family! She married Sheldon Williams of the Sacramento Kings and her brother Anthony Parker plays for the Toronto Raptors so now there are three people in the family that play professional basketball. That's the start of a pretty good family basketball team if you ask me.
